Finding Light and Love in the Practice of Law
Being an attorney in private practice is sometimes disheartening. The environment can be competitive, exhausting and overly focused on the bottom-line.
After practicing law for over twenty years, I am grateful to notice myself finding more ease and meaning in the work. I have learned that focusing on the law itself and the business of being a lawyer alone doesn’t serve me. To me, the best moments of being a lawyer are simple. Moments of high vibration—moments of gratitude and human connection.
Meaningful work as an attorney is often found through the most ordinary human interactions. Having the privilege of a long-time client call late at night to share that his father passed away. Feeling honored that a client shared my name with a friend who is looking for a trusted attorney. Mentoring a young associate. Providing a listening ear to a co-worker. Finding answers for strangers that could never afford to pay me for my time.
Decades ago, my ego told me I should strive for a career that was notable or recognized. Today I’m most grateful for small moments of joy in being a trusted advisor and colleague.
